Clara Barton Biography
Clara Barton was an independent nurse during the Civil War. She aligned herself on the Unions side. She founded the American Red Cross in 1881. Most of her life was dedicated to helping others and now with the American Red Cross she still helps people in need today. Her most significant accomplishment was the being the president of the American Red Cross. At the American Red Cross Clara helped and directed the victims of disasters. She was called the "Angel of the Battlefield" because she worked hard to help soldiers in any way she could. In the beginning of the war she collected and distributed supplies for the army. She wanted to help so she became a nurse. Clara helped in Fredricksburg, Virginia and for the wounded in Antietam. After the war she worked for the War Department to help families reunite with their missing soldiers or find information about missing soldiers.
